about

The duo Shunyata—Brian Moran (electronics) and Matt Hannafin (percussion)—explores sound sculpture and the meditational aspects of free improvisation, creating an auditory envelope that alternately silences, incorporates, and acquiesces to the performance venue's ambient space.

These recordings document two performances given on successive days in early 2007. Track 1 is the audio portion of an improvised collaboration with video artist Chika Iijima at the {R}ake series, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on March 28, 2007. Track 2 is an improvised collaboration with trumpeter Nate Wooley at the C.O.M.A. series, ABC No Rio, NYC, on April 1, 2007. In the former, the occasional clink of silverware should be considered an integral part of the music; in the latter, the occasional clank of the venue’s heating pipes was so integral that it largely determined the structure of the performance. Both sounds were welcomed and incorporated into the music.

This recording was originally available as release no. 32 in the Sachimay Interventions series.

"In shunyata there is neither movement nor non-movement nor both movement and non-movement nor something other than movement and non-movement. Reality embraces all, includes all, and transcends all." — Nagarjuna
